The Osun State Government has appointed Prince Tajudeen Olanrewaju as the new Akire of Ikire, following the demise of Oba Olatunde Falabi, Lambeloye III, on February 27, 2026.
The appointment was approved at a State Executive Council meeting presided over by Governor Ademola Adeleke.
The State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, who disclosed this in a statement in Osogbo, said the council also approved the appointment of Prince Tijani Feyi Ademola as Aladodo of Adodo in Atakumosa East Local Government Area, and Prince (Dr.) Jacob Adetayo Haastrup as Olumobi of Imobi-Ijesa in the same local government area.
He explained that the appointments were part of efforts to fill vacant traditional stools in the state.
Alimi noted that the Akire of Ikire stool had been a subject of controversy since 2021, following a Supreme Court judgment which ruled that the Lambeloye Ruling House had no right to occupy the stool, adding that the Osun State Government and the five ruling houses of Ikire later agreed to amend the 1958 Akire Chieftaincy Declaration.
He stated that the new appointments are expected to bring stability to traditional institutions in the state, emphasising that they were made in line with extant laws and traditions.
The commissioner also disclosed that the council approved the elevation of new Obas from Ile-Ife, Osogbo, and Ijesha traditional councils, describing the move as a way to recognise and honour their contributions.
He added that the development reflects the government’s commitment to upholding tradition and the rule of law in the state.
