The Action Peoples Party (APP) has instituted a case against the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the August 15 governorship election in Osun State, Bola Oyebamiji, before a Federal High Court sitting in Osogbo over alleged irregularities in the credentials he submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The suit, numbered FHC/OS/CS/50b026, was filed by Abdulateef R. on behalf of APP, with INEC and APC joined as respondents.
In the originating summons dated March 16, the plaintiff asked the court to determine whether documents submitted by the second defendant and relied upon by INEC for the publication of Oyebamiji as the APC candidate for the Osun State governorship election complied with the provisions of Section 182(1)(j) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
The plaintiff also sought an order invalidating the publication of Oyebamiji’s name as the APC candidate for the gubernatorial election scheduled for August 15, 2026.
APP further prayed the court to restrain INEC from recognising or further dealing with Oyebamiji as the APC candidate, and to compel the commission to expunge his name from the list of candidates for the forthcoming election.
Reacting to the suit, Osun APC spokesperson, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the case as diversionary and lacking merit.
He described the suit as frivolous and politically motivated, alleging that the APP allowed itself to be used for a political agenda aimed at discrediting the APC candidate.
Olabisi maintained that Oyebamiji is fully qualified to contest the election, having met all statutory requirements for the governorship race.
He further alleged that the legal action was a sign of panic by political opponents, particularly the incumbent administration, over the credentials and popularity of the APC candidate.
The APC spokesperson added that no amount of alleged misinformation or political manoeuvring would stop the party from winning the forthcoming governorship election, expressing confidence that Oyebamiji would emerge victorious at the polls.
