With barely 24 hours to the governorship election in Osun State, suspected political thugs have allegedly attacked the palace of the Aree of Iree, Oba Muritala Oyelakin.
The monarch, while speaking with newsmen in Iree on Friday, said the incident occurred at about 2am when two Sienna vehicles allegedly arrived at the palace, with the occupants firing shots into the air before shooting at the gate of the palace.
He said the attackers might have been discouraged from gaining access to the palace because the lights were on in the premises, where some people were observing prayers at the time of the incident.
According to him, he repeatedly switched the lights off and on to draw attention to the presence of people in the palace and scare the assailants away.
The monarch said he was in a prayer session with some people still present on the premises when the incident occurred.
He said he saw two Sienna vehicles, adding that one of the assailants first shot into the air before firing at the palace gate.
The monarch said he repeatedly switched the lights off and on to give the impression that people were present, which he believed helped to scare the attackers away.
He expressed concern over the incident and called on security agencies to thoroughly investigate the attack, arrest those responsible and ensure that they were brought to justice.
