Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has granted a university scholarship to the child of a woman killed during the heavy rainstorm in Osogbo, the state capital.
This was contained in a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, on Tuesday.
According to the statement, Governor Adeleke visited victims of the Osogbo rainstorm at various hospitals in the state capital, where he offered prayers and support to the injured.
The statement noted that the governor commiserated with the victims and also condoled with other patients receiving treatment at the facilities.
At the Asubiaro General Hospital, the governor expressed sadness over the death of Mrs. Jemilat Tijani, who was affected at the Orita Sabo area of Osogbo, and announced a university scholarship for her son, Farouk Tijani, through Osun State University.
He directed the Secretary to the State Government to oversee the scholarship process upon completion of the admission procedures.
At the state teaching hospital, Adeleke described the rainstorm as a regrettable natural disaster and cited similar life-threatening incidents in other parts of the world, including North America and Europe.
He said climate change remains a serious global threat and stressed the need for decisive action, noting that his administration had prioritised mitigation efforts and received recognition from local and international bodies for its climate policies.
The governor added that immediate sensitisation would be carried out across communities, while also acknowledging technical briefings already issued by the state’s climate change envoy.
At the police barracks affected by the rainstorm, Adeleke assessed the level of destruction and described the situation as unfortunate.
He said the state had taken inventory of the damage and would collaborate with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the National Economic Council to provide relief to victims.
