The Osun State chapter of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) has concluded the distribution of 90 operational patrol vehicles to security agencies across the state, describing the initiative as a practical demonstration of the gains of local government autonomy and its commitment to improving public safety.
The final batch of 60 patrol vehicles was presented during a ceremony held at the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo, completing the distribution exercise undertaken by the leadership of the 30 local government councils and the Ife-East Area Office.
The vehicles were allocated to major security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, Nigerian Air Force, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and other security formations operating in the state.
Addressing the gathering, Osun ALGON Chairman, Hon. Samuel Idowu Abiodun, said the presentation fulfilled the commitment made by local government chairmen to strengthen security across the state.
He noted that the first batch of patrol vehicles had been delivered a few weeks earlier, adding that the distribution had now been completed as promised.
Abiodun described peace and security as essential for sustainable development, stressing that local governments, being the closest level of government to the people, are better positioned to identify and address security challenges within their communities.
He further stated that the project demonstrates the benefits of local government autonomy, explaining that improved financial and administrative independence has enabled councils to execute people-oriented projects more effectively.
According to him, the patrol vehicles are not only a security intervention but also evidence that empowered local governments can directly impact the lives of residents through meaningful development.
The ALGON chairman commended security agencies for their continued efforts in protecting lives and property across Osun State and appealed to residents to support security operatives by providing credible and timely information.
He also urged the beneficiary agencies to ensure the vehicles are properly maintained and effectively deployed to improve crime prevention, emergency response and public safety.
Also speaking, the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Southwest, DIG Fayoade Mustapha, described security as a collective responsibility that requires sustained collaboration between government and security agencies.
He said the additional patrol vehicles would enhance operational mobility, improve response time, strengthen intelligence gathering, expand patrol coverage and promote greater inter-agency collaboration in tackling crime across Osun State.
Mustapha assured residents that the vehicles would be deployed strictly for security operations and reaffirmed the commitment of security agencies to maintaining peace and safeguarding lives and property throughout the state.
