A woman, Fatima Usman, on Tuesday, May 5, sought divorce from her husband, Sulaiman Adamu, at the Magajin Gari Shari’a Court in Kaduna State.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Fatima asked the court to dissolve their three-month-old marriage through Khul’i, a form of divorce in which a woman returns her dowry in exchange for her freedom.
She informed the court that although her dowry was ₦100,000, she was willing to refund ₦50,000 as part of the process.
The presiding judge, Malam Yakubu Abdullahi, asked the defendant whether he agreed to the request.
In his response, Adamu consented to the arrangement and indicated that he had no objection to the terms presented.
The judge explained that under Islamic law, a woman seeking divorce is permitted to return her dowry, which may be equal to, less than, or more than the original amount.
Following the submissions, the court ruled that the marriage had been dissolved.
The judge also directed that the agreed portion of the dowry be refunded without delay.
