Comedian and activist, Mr Macaroni, has criticised the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over comments suggesting he could have shot Channels Television host, Seun Okinbaloye, during a live broadcast.
Wike had, during a media chat with select journalists, faulted the position taken by Okinbaloye, who raised concerns about the implications of a one-party system on Nigeria’s democracy.
The Channels TV anchor, while speaking on Politics Today, expressed worry over developments surrounding the opposition, particularly the African Democratic Congress (ADC), noting that a lack of political competition could undermine democratic values.
He stressed that competitive elections are essential for democracy, warning that weakening opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections could have serious consequences for the country’s democratic future.
Reacting on Friday, Wike expressed anger over the journalist’s comments, stating that he was deeply displeased with the position taken during the programme.
He said he was shocked by the remarks and criticised the role of the interviewer for expressing personal views on national television, describing it as unprofessional.
Wike, however, clarified that his comment about shooting the journalist was not literal, but an expression of anger over the situation.
Responding to the development, Mr Macaroni condemned the minister’s remarks, describing them as inappropriate and dangerous.
He stated that it was unacceptable for a serving public official to make comments suggesting violence against a journalist, adding that such behaviour reflects a lack of accountability in public service.
