The Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Comrade Olalekan Akindoju, was reportedly arrested by police operatives at his residence in Osogbo on Thursday morning.
The arrest was confirmed by the Chairman of the NUJ in Osun State, Comrade Adeyemi Aboderin.
Information gathered by journalists indicated that armed policemen allegedly stormed Akindoju’s apartment in the early hours of Thursday before taking him to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) headquarters in Osogbo.
Sources within the union disclosed that the reason for the arrest was still unknown as of the time of filing this report, with neither the police nor those close to the journalist providing details of the allegations against him.
The development has sparked concern among journalists in the state, with members of the profession seeking clarification on the circumstances surrounding the arrest.
Several colleagues of the detained union official have also called for openness from the authorities regarding the matter.
Attempts to get a response from the Osun State Police Command proved unsuccessful as of press time.
The police were yet to issue an official statement on the incident or disclose the basis for Akindoju’s detention.
