A marital dispute has been brought before the Grade A Customary Court at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, as a woman, Mosunmola, accused her husband, Ayinla, of living an irresponsible lifestyle.
Mosunmola alleged that Ayinla consistently neglected his responsibilities at home and showed little concern for her and their children.
She further claimed that he led a reckless life, often returning home late at night after she and the children had gone to bed.
The plaintiff explained that their relationship was fraught with frequent quarrels, resulting in several separations, and that she eventually left the marriage because she could no longer endure the strain.
She urged the court to grant her custody of their children and to compel her husband to take responsibility for their welfare.
In response, Ayinla agreed to the dissolution of the marriage but accused Mosunmola of refusing to cook for him and neglecting his welfare.
He described her as talkative and disrespectful, claiming that she frequently insulted him.
During the proceedings, Mosunmola testified that she and her husband never got along, saying the union failed to make any meaningful progress during their eight years together.
She stated that he neither paid her bride price nor fulfilled traditional marital rites, and that she had single-handedly cared for their children’s needs, including feeding and schooling, while he was often absent and abusive.
Ayinla countered, insisting that he paid N2,000 as her bride price and alleging that Mosunmola lacked morals, refused to cook for him, and was a poor role model for their children.
He added that their marriage ended when she moved out of his house.
The court president, Mrs. S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case for judgment.
