Nigerian singer, Temilade Openiyi, popularly known as Tems, has opened up about her views on marriage, stating that it should be approached as a commitment aimed at personal growth rather than being driven solely by emotions.
Speaking in a recent interview with media personality Angie Martinez, the Grammy-winning artiste said marriage is not always smooth and requires a realistic mindset from those considering it.
Tems explained that because of the uncertainties that come with marriage, she prefers a God-fearing partner, noting that such a person would have a sense of accountability.
She said a partner who is accountable to a higher authority is more likely to remain committed in a relationship, adding that love alone is not enough to sustain a marriage.
The singer further stated that marriage should be based on compatibility and personal development, as it is expected to bring out both good and challenging moments that ultimately shape individuals.
According to her, “My partner has to be a God-fearing man. Because why would you truly love me if you don’t have anyone that you answer to? If you’re not accountable to anyone, how could you choose to love and keep loving me for the rest of our lives?
“If you’re the god of your life, why would you love me forever? You could just discard me anytime you want. But marriage is something that makes you better as a human being. It should. It shouldn’t be about only love, it’s about compatibility. It’s about whether a relationship makes you a better person, like it evolves you. Because marriage is a whole another level, it’s supposed to bring out the hard times,”
