The Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, has confirmed a violent attack on its Egbedore Local Government Command headquarters in Awo, resulting in injuries to officers, destruction of property, and the theft of firearms.
In a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the Corps, Yusuf Idowu Abass, the incident was said to have occurred on Monday at about 8:00 p.m., when a distressed civilian ran into the Amotekun office seeking refuge after allegedly being chased and attacked by hoodlums.
According to the statement, the victim, who was returning from a local eatery, had earlier been involved in a disagreement with an individual over a football-related issue the previous day, which later escalated.
The Corps explained that the suspect mobilised a group of armed hoodlums who attacked the victim with dangerous weapons, including machetes, before he managed to escape to the Amotekun office, where officers on duty intervened and offered him protection.
It further disclosed that the assailants later regrouped in large numbers and launched a coordinated attack on the command facility after discovering the victim’s location.
It was gathered that during the attack, the hoodlums vandalised office infrastructure, destroyed operational equipment, injured officers, and breached the facility, where they further assaulted the victim and carted away firearms belonging to the command.
The statement noted that despite the intensity of the assault, Amotekun operatives were able to repel the attackers and restore order at the scene.
It added that five suspects were arrested during the incident and have been handed over to the Divisional Police Headquarters in Awo for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Corps condemned the attack, describing it as a serious act of lawlessness and a direct assault on the state’s security architecture, while assuring that efforts are ongoing to recover the stolen weapons and apprehend other perpetrators.
Residents were also urged to remain calm and support security agencies with credible information that could assist ongoing investigations.
