Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, has encouraged economically disadvantaged Nigerians to embrace small-scale businesses such as selling akara, roasted corn and kulikuli as a means of earning a living.
She gave the advice while hosting the wives of the 36 state governors in Abuja, where she highlighted several empowerment programmes and financial interventions carried out through her office to support vulnerable Nigerians.
The First Lady explained that her office provides grants, rather than loans, to beneficiaries to help them establish small businesses without the burden of repayment.
According to her, businesses such as akara frying, roasted corn sales and kulikuli production require minimal capital to start, making them suitable for people seeking a source of income.
She added that the grants are part of ongoing efforts to restore hope, promote self-reliance and improve the livelihoods of struggling Nigerians.
Senator Tinubu also disclosed that her office has continued to implement various empowerment initiatives aimed at supporting citizens across different sectors.
She listed some of her personal interventions to include a ₦2 billion donation for tuberculosis treatment, ₦1 billion for breast cancer intervention and ₦500 million to tackle food malnutrition.
The First Lady further stated that her office has supported programmes in agriculture, education, social investment and digital skills development, including scholarships and ICT training conducted in partnership with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).
According to her, the initiatives are designed to complement the Federal Government’s efforts to improve citizens’ welfare and expand economic opportunities.
She also appealed to Nigerians not to lose hope despite the prevailing economic challenges, expressing optimism that the country’s situation would improve under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
Senator Tinubu maintained that Nigerians should remain hopeful and resilient, stressing that the country has every reason to believe in a better future.
