A courtroom scene has generated reactions on social media after a suspect reportedly attributed his alleged criminal conduct to the economic challenges facing the country.
The incident, captured in a video that has since gone viral online, showed the suspect, who was standing trial for an undisclosed offence, appealing to the judge for mercy.
While speaking in Igbo language, the man pleaded for forgiveness and attributed his actions to the economic situation in the country, drawing laughter from court officials and other persons present in the courtroom.
He said, “Please forgive me, I will not do it again, it’s Tinubu’s fault,”
The video quickly gained attention on social media, with users expressing differing opinions over the suspect’s remarks.
Reacting to the clip on Facebook, a user identified as Benjamin Chukwemeka called for the suspect’s release.
Another commenter, Ken Ilongwo, suggested that President Bola Tinubu should be held responsible for the situation that led to the suspect’s statement.
However, not all reactions were sympathetic. Some social media users argued that economic hardship should not be used as an excuse for criminal conduct.
One commenter, Seun Felious, maintained that wrongdoing remains unacceptable regardless of prevailing circumstances.
Similarly, Allen Jobbo said the matter should not be viewed merely as a source of amusement, despite the humorous reactions it generated online.
The viral video has continued to fuel discussions on social media, with many Nigerians debating the effects of economic hardship and the extent of personal responsibility during difficult times.
