Award-winning singer Davido has dismissed claims that education is a scam, stressing that schooling remains important for success in every profession and field of endeavour.
The singer made the remarks during an interaction with journalists while visiting Babcock University.
Davido said he remained proud of earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music from the institution in 2015, adding that completing university education had become a source of pride among his colleagues in the entertainment industry.
The music star also disclosed plans to support the growth of the university’s music department by donating a modern facility equipped with standard music equipment to help train globally competitive graduates.
He explained that balancing academics with his rapidly growing music career at the time was difficult and almost made him abandon his studies.
Davido, however, credited his father, Adedeji Adeleke, his aunt and some lecturers for encouraging him to complete his education despite the pressure from his music career.
The singer added that aside from meeting his wife, Chioma Adeleke, at the university, one of the greatest lessons he learnt from the institution was discipline.
Davido said he had already spent two years studying in the United States before returning to Nigeria to continue his education at Babcock University.
He noted that his growing popularity at the time made it difficult to fully participate in campus activities because of constant attention from fans, but said he was repeatedly encouraged not to quit until he eventually graduated.
The singer added that he often proudly tells colleagues in the entertainment industry that he attended and completed university education, describing it as one of his achievements.
Speaking further, Davido said the university’s music department deserved greater investment and expansion, insisting that creativity had become a major economic force in Nigeria.
He disclosed that he recently built a standard music studio in Lagos and was ready to support the institution with modern equipment and facilities for music students.
Davido also faulted the growing trend among young people who describe education as a scam, insisting that although some successful individuals did not attend school, it would be wrong to discourage education.
He advised Nigerian youths to believe in themselves, remain passionate about their chosen careers and continuously work hard to improve their skills.
The singer also urged young people to remain focused and committed to their dreams, adding that love for one’s profession and faith in God remain important ingredients for success.
Davido was warmly received by the university management led by the Vice Chancellor, Afolarin Ojewole, alongside students who trooped out in large numbers to welcome him back to campus.
