The Federal High Court in Abuja has convicted and sentenced former Acting Accountant-General of the Federation, Chukwunyere Anamekwe Nwabuoku, to 72 years imprisonment over a N868.46 million fraud.
Nwabuoku was prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on charges bordering on money laundering.
The EFCC, in a statement posted on its official X handle on Monday, described the conviction as a significant step in its efforts to ensure accountability and deter financial crimes in the public sector.
The EFCC confirmed that Nwabuoku, who was prosecuted at the Federal High Court in Abuja for money laundering involving N868.46 million, was convicted and sentenced to a total of 72 years imprisonment.
The anti-graft agency said the offences involved the diversion and concealment of public funds amounting to over N868 million.
The court found him guilty after evaluating evidence presented by the prosecution, which detailed how the funds were allegedly laundered through multiple transactions.
The sentence, which totals 72 years, reflects the cumulative penalties for the counts on which he was convicted.
Nwabuoku had served briefly as Acting Accountant-General of the Federation before his removal from office amid corruption allegations.
While I don’t support criminality in any form, I can assure you that this just another selective justice. When naija becomes serious in fighting corruption, everybody will see it.
