The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Enoch Adeboye, has defended President Bola Tinubu against criticism over the country’s worsening insecurity.
Adeboye said the president has fulfilled his responsibility by issuing directives to the military.
The cleric spoke recently at the US-Nigeria Faith Heroes Award Gala organised by the Save Nigeria Group in Washington, D.C.
According to Adeboye, it was unfair to expect the president to personally lead military operations after giving orders to the armed forces.
He said he did not support those accusing the president of not doing enough, maintaining that once the Commander-in-Chief had issued instructions to his subordinates, he had discharged his responsibility and should not be expected to wear military uniform and join the battlefield.
Drawing a comparison with the United States, Adeboye said American President Donald Trump also issues military directives without participating directly in combat operations.
Despite defending Tinubu, the cleric acknowledged that insecurity in Nigeria has worsened, noting that terrorism and kidnapping, once concentrated in the northern part of the country, have spread to the South.
He said the situation had become so severe that people were questioning the presence of God, adding that the sponsors of terrorism were known but continued to operate freely.
Adeboye disclosed that he had discussed the country’s security challenges with President Tinubu and the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, urging the president to issue a 90-day ultimatum to military commanders to eliminate terrorism or resign.
According to him, the government should focus on apprehending those financing terrorist activities, describing them as influential individuals, including businessmen and politicians.
He said those funding terrorist activities were known and urged the government to go after them, warning that the security challenge would persist unless those supplying terrorists with arms and ammunition were brought to justice.
The RCCG leader also called on the United States and other countries to support Nigeria’s efforts in tackling terrorism and restoring security across the country.
