The Oyo State Police Command has denied reports alleging that a pastor was arrested for supplying arms and ammunition to suspects involved in the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, describing the claim as false and without foundation.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the command said a viral Facebook post and other online reports alleging the arrest of a cleric were misleading.
The police explained that the post failed to identify the alleged pastor by name or address and clarified that neither the command nor any security agency participating in the ongoing rescue operation had made such an arrest.
According to the command, the publication appeared to be a deliberate attempt to divert the attention of security operatives from ongoing rescue efforts and undermine public confidence in the professionalism of personnel working to secure the release of the abducted victims.
The command advised members of the public to disregard the report and rely only on information released through its verified communication channels for updates on the incident.
It also warned individuals and media platforms against spreading false information, stressing that anyone found circulating misinformation capable of disrupting security operations or eroding public confidence would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to the safe rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers, assuring residents that efforts to secure their release and maintain public safety across Oyo State remain ongoing.
