Veteran Nollywood actress Remilekun Oshodi, popularly known as Remi Surutu, has revealed that she was mocked online over the death of her daughter after openly supporting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the 2023 election campaign.
The actress made the disclosure at the official launch of EKO57, a Lagos-based political support group backing the president, where she recounted the backlash she received from critics on social media.
In a video from the event that has since gone viral online, Surutu said some critics blamed Tinubu for the death of her daughter because she campaigned for him.
She explained that during the election period, many people attacked and insulted her online for supporting Tinubu.
According to her, some critics even claimed that the political leader she supported was responsible for the death of her child, a statement she said did not affect her resolve.
Surutu stated that despite the attacks, she remained committed to exercising her civic responsibility by participating in the election.
She added that she returned the following day to cast her vote, stressing that voting remains a fundamental right that should not be influenced by pressure or intimidation.
The actress also defended Tinubu’s leadership, noting that governing Nigeria is a difficult task that many critics underestimate.
She said when she met the president, whom she described as “Baba,” he was performing his duties well.
According to her, those who believe the president has not performed well should present someone from their own family to govern the country for a day in order to understand the challenges involved.
Surutu further stated that she has no intention of withdrawing her support for the president despite the criticism she has faced.
She affirmed that she would continue to campaign for him and vote for him whenever necessary.
The actress lost her first daughter, Ayomikun Elizabeth Oladayo, in July 2017 due to complications arising from Sickle Cell Disease.
Following the incident, Surutu publicly spoke about the pain of losing her daughter while expressing gratitude to God for giving her the strength to endure the loss.
