Ajasco – Veteran Nigerian actor Abiodun Ayoyinka has spoken about the challenges he has faced despite gaining widespread fame for portraying the iconic character Papa Ajasco.
Ayoyinka made the disclosure during an interview with media personality Lucky Udu, explaining that ownership of the character has limited his opportunities outside the popular comedy franchise.
The actor explained that the character Papa Ajasco is legally registered by the production company owned by Wale Adenuga, making it difficult for him to use the identity independently for personal projects or commercial engagements.
He said the restriction has prevented him from appearing in advertisements or brand campaigns, noting that many companies prefer him to appear in the well-known costume and persona associated with the character.
Ayoyinka added that he does not have exclusive rights to use the name or costume linked to the character without first seeking permission from the owner of the production.
According to him, the strong public identification with the character has also made it difficult for him to secure opportunities outside the role, as many people expect him to appear exactly as the character whenever he is invited for engagements.
The actor further disclosed that he previously worked with the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture before retiring about five years ago.
He noted that life has been challenging in recent years, stating that since his retirement it has not been easy to move around or build new connections. Ayoyinka also revealed that he does not currently own a house or a car.
Ayoyinka is widely known for his role in the long-running Nigerian comedy series Papa Ajasco & Company, produced by Wale Adenuga Productions, which became one of Nigeria’s most popular television programmes.
