The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has issued a set of safety guidelines for female students as part of efforts to reduce the risk of sexual harassment and rape within the institution.
The advisory, released by the university’s Student Affairs Division and displayed on a roll-up banner on campus, forms part of ongoing awareness and counselling initiatives aimed at promoting students’ personal safety.
Among the safety measures highlighted, the university advised female students to be cautious in their interactions with men, including avoiding indiscriminate handshakes.
The institution also advised female students to dress modestly, avoid mingling carelessly with men, refrain from staying alone with a man in secluded places, and avoid seeking unnecessary favours from men.
The advisory further urged students not to watch pornographic films or pictures, avoid accepting intoxicants, remain vigilant when offered drinks, and resist pressure by being assertive.
The Student Affairs Division also encouraged female students to learn to say no and warned that engaging in casual sexual relationships could result in unintended pregnancy.
According to the university, the guidelines are part of its counselling programme designed to educate female students on personal safety and practical ways to minimise the risk of sexual harassment and rape on campus.
UNILAG has, in recent years, recorded cases of sexual assault and rape within its community, prompting the institution to strengthen awareness campaigns and counselling programmes aimed at protecting students.
