The United Bank for Africa (UBA) Group has dismissed a publication circulating on social media alleging that its Group Chairman, Tony Elumelu, has divorced his wife, describing the claim as false and misleading.
The organisation said the report, which it noted did not originate from The Guardian, is entirely fabricated and aimed at damaging the reputation of its chairman.
UBA stated that the matter has been reported to law enforcement authorities, who have already commenced investigations into the source of the publication.
It disclosed that three individuals allegedly linked to the creation and dissemination of the false report have been arrested.
The suspects were identified as Kingsley Akunemeihe, also known as @Directorkem, Chigozie Success Ihebom, and John Surpruchi Nwanorue, known as @problemchimky.
The bank added that investigations are ongoing and may lead to further arrests and prosecution of other individuals involved in originating or spreading the content.
UBA warned individuals and platforms involved in sharing the report to immediately cease further dissemination.
It directed all parties to remove the publication from their platforms, refrain from reposting similar content, and preserve all relevant records, including digital communications and metadata, pending legal action.
The bank cautioned that failure to comply would result in legal proceedings, including claims for defamation, damages, and other remedies under the law.
UBA reiterated its commitment to protecting the reputation, privacy, and integrity of its brand and that of its chairman, adding that it would pursue all necessary legal avenues to hold those responsible accountable.
