The Nigeria Revenue Service, in collaboration with the Joint Revenue Board, has introduced a new Taxpayer Identification system for all taxable persons in the country as part of efforts to modernise tax administration and improve compliance.
The development was announced in a public notice shared on the agency’s X handle on Monday.
According to the NRS, the initiative is backed by Sections 6, 7, and 8 of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, 2025, which makes it mandatory for every taxable person to obtain a Tax ID.
The agency explained that the system was introduced to strengthen tax administration, improve transparency, and streamline service delivery across federal and sub-national tax authorities.
The NRS disclosed that the Tax ID would serve as a single and unified identity for taxpayers, enabling easier interaction with tax authorities at different levels of government.
It added that the initiative is expected to consolidate taxpayer records, eliminate duplication, and improve the management of tax-related information.
The agency further stated that the new system would simplify tax compliance processes, including registration, tax filing, and payment procedures.
According to the revenue authority, the initiative is also designed to improve transparency and accountability in tax collection by enhancing the tracking and visibility of taxpayer records.
The NRS noted that the framework would harmonise taxpayer information across all levels of government.
As part of the transition process, the new Tax ID system will replace the existing Tax Identification Number Validation API currently used by Ministries, Departments and Agencies, financial institutions, and other organisations.
The agency directed organisations requiring integration or validation services for individuals, enterprises, and business names to contact the Standardisation and Modernisation Department of the Joint Revenue Board for access to the new API and integration guidelines.
It also advised organisations handling the validation of corporate entities to liaise with the Tax Automation Department of the NRS.
The agency stated that the reform forms part of wider efforts by revenue authorities to digitise Nigeria’s tax system and improve compliance through integrated and efficient technology-driven processes.
