There was a mild drama at an Oyo State High Court on Wednesday after a suspected kidnapper, identified as Salisu Abubakar, reportedly escaped from the court premises shortly after the day’s proceedings.
The suspect allegedly fled after the court session ended despite being in the presence of his father and legal counsel.
Following unsuccessful efforts to rearrest him, security operatives immediately arrested and detained his father.
Salisu Abubakar was standing trial on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and kidnapping.
He was earlier arrested in connection with the abduction of one Sunday Olanrewaju at Oke Adua, Iganna, in Oyo State on May 18, 2025.
During the court sitting, the prosecution alleged that the suspect and other accomplices still at large conspired to kidnap the victim within the Iseyin Judicial Division.
According to the prosecutor, the offence contravenes Section 516 of the Criminal Code Cap 38, Volume II, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.
Before the suspect escaped, the presiding judge, Oyeyemi Ajayi, had adjourned the matter until June 11, 2026, for continuation of trial.
