A Nigerian doctor based in Canada, Arinze Onwumelu, has advised singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, to undergo a medical brain examination following his celebrity boxing bout with skit maker Carter Efe.
The bout, held over the weekend in Lagos, ended in defeat for the ‘Zazuu’ crooner, drawing widespread reactions from fans and public figures across social media.
In a post and accompanying video that surfaced online on Monday, Onwumelu, also known as Dr Zo, recommended that Portable undergo a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scan to assess possible internal injuries sustained during the fight.
He expressed concern that the nature of punches landed by Carter Efe on sensitive areas of the singer’s head could pose serious health risks, including a possible subdural haematoma.
The doctor noted that the encounter, which was meant to be an exhibition match for entertainment, appeared to have exceeded expected limits, raising questions about the level of force used during the bout.
He warned that the intensity of the blows could have lasting effects on Portable’s health, stressing the need for immediate medical evaluation.
Onwumelu further urged those close to the singer to ensure he receives proper medical attention, including a comprehensive brain test, to rule out any potential damage to blood vessels.
He also advised organisers of similar events to prioritise safety by making protective headgear compulsory for participants in order to minimise the risk of serious injuries.
Prior to the match, Portable had expressed confidence in his ability to defeat Carter Efe, having recorded victories in previous celebrity boxing contests against Speed Darlington and actor Charles Okocha.
