The Presidency has fired back at former Osun State Governor, Rauf Aregbesola, over his criticism of the administration of President Bola Tinubu, describing his remarks as misleading and lacking in self-reflection.
Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, accused Aregbesola of attacking the Tinubu administration without acknowledging his own record in public office.
Onanuga described the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a platform of politicians driven by desperation and lacking credible plans for governance, noting that Aregbesola’s comments were in line with opposition narratives on the economy and security.
He stated that Aregbesola failed to reflect on his tenure as governor of Osun State, which he said was marked by hardship for civil servants and pensioners due to unpaid salaries and financial challenges.
The Presidency maintained that during Aregbesola’s administration, Osun State experienced significant fiscal strain, with workers reportedly receiving only fractions of their salaries while pensioners also faced prolonged delays in payments.
Onanuga added that the financial situation inherited by subsequent administrations required extensive efforts to stabilise, noting that former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola initiated corrective measures.
He further stated that the current Governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, is still addressing the challenges left behind from previous administrations.
The Presidential aide also criticised Aregbesola’s tenure as Minister of Interior, stating that the period witnessed several security breaches, including jailbreaks across correctional facilities in different parts of the country.
He noted that multiple attacks on correctional centres occurred within that period, leading to the escape of thousands of inmates, which he described as a major security concern.
Onanuga said it was contradictory for Aregbesola to criticise the current administration on security issues, given the challenges recorded during his time in office.
The Presidency cautioned Nigerians against being influenced by what it described as politically motivated criticism, urging citizens to assess the records of public office holders critically.
It stated that the Tinubu administration has continued to implement reforms aimed at addressing economic challenges, including measures targeted at supporting vulnerable groups and stabilising the economy.
According to the statement, government interventions have included wage adjustments, financial support initiatives, and policies aimed at reducing inflation and improving economic conditions.
On security, the Presidency said the administration has strengthened support for the armed forces and intelligence agencies through increased funding, equipment procurement, and collaboration with international partners.
The statement added that efforts are ongoing to tackle terrorism and banditry, which it described as inherited challenges.
Onanuga maintained that the Renewed Hope Agenda remains on course, noting that recent economic indicators show improvements in areas such as foreign reserves, investment inflows, and market performance.
He insisted that the administration’s policies are gradually yielding results and dismissed claims that the agenda is ineffective, reiterating that the government remains committed to delivering on its promises.
