The senator representing Osun West Senatorial District, Dr Lere Oyewumi, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the Accord party.
Oyewumi, who was elected on the platform of the PDP in the 2023 general elections, announced his defection in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday.
Before his departure, he was the last PDP senator from Osun , following the earlier defections of two senators to the APC.
The PDP in the state had previously lost three members of the to the APC during a series of defections in 2025.
Although the governor of Osun State, moved to the Accord Party in December 2025, Oyewumi had remained in the PDP until his latest decision.
His defection comes amid ongoing political realignments in the state, including the recent move by six members of the House of Representatives from Osun PDP to the Accord Party.
Earlier, the 25 Osun House of Assembly PDP Lawmakers joined the Accord Party as part of efforts to align politically with the governor.
Details of the senator’s defection were disclosed in a statement by his media aide, Timileyin Popoola, indicating that Oyewumi had formally registered as a member of the Accord Party in Ward 9, , located in of the state.
The statement said the registration ceremony took place in his hometown, where party members and supporters welcomed him into the Accord Party.
He was received by the Osun State Chairman of the party, , alongside other party leaders and stakeholders.
According to the statement, the senator’s decision followed his earlier resignation from the PDP, citing unresolved internal differences within the party and his intention to continue representing the interests of his constituents.
The statement also noted that Oyewumi remained committed to effective representation and development-focused policies for the people of Osun West Senatorial District.
Part of the statement reads, “Deputy Minority Leader of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Lere Kamorudeen Oyewumi, has formally joined the Accord Party in his ward, Ward 9, Irewole Local Government Area, marking a significant political development in Osun West, particularly within Irewole LGA.
“The registration ceremony took place in his hometown, Ward 9, where party members and supporters warmly received Senator Oyewumi into the Accord fold. He was formally received by the Osun State Chairman of the party, Victor Akande, alongside other party leaders and stakeholders who welcomed the senator into the party,
