An official of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Ogun State, Abass Olalekan, is currently in police custody following the death of a female corps member on Tuesday.
The corps member, Victoria Ariyo, who was serving under the Abeokuta South Local Government Area (LGA), reportedly died from complications related to pregnancy.
It was gathered that the corps member had terminated her pregnancy and died from complications that followed the procedure.
Her remains were buried at Kobape Cemetery on Kobape-Sagamu Road in Abeokuta.
According to Daily Trust report, Ariyo’s death occurred barely a month after another female corps member, Adeleye Mary, died under circumstances described as mysterious.
Mary, who was also serving under Abeokuta South LGA, was attached to the Ogun State Television (OGTV) as her Place of Primary Assignment (PPA).
A source disclosed that the first corps member died at her residence located close to her PPA, where her lifeless body was found, and that the cause of her death had yet to be determined.
However, the second corps member, who died on Tuesday, was said to have died from complications arising from an abortion procedure.
It was alleged that the NYSC official, who serves as the Local Government Inspector (LGI) for Abeokuta South, Abass Olalekan, was involved in circumstances leading to the corps member’s death.
Sources claimed that the LGI had a romantic relationship with the deceased, which resulted in pregnancy, and that the termination of the pregnancy led to her death.
A police source confirmed the arrest of the NYSC official, stating that the matter under investigation reflected the facts surrounding the case.
The police source further noted that the situation raised concerns about the legality of engaging in a romantic relationship with someone under official supervision.
The source also confirmed that Olalekan is currently in custody at the command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.
The source clarified that there is no connection between the current incident and the previous case involving the death of Adeleye Mary.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, confirmed the death of Ariyo and stated that the matter is under investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
