A woman, Abiodun, has approached a Grade A Customary Court sitting at Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, seeking the dissolution of her relationship with her husband, Damilola, on grounds of irresponsibility, troublemaking, and battery.
Abiodun told the court that her husband was merely a figurehead in the home and failed to take up responsibilities expected of him.
She stated that although Damilola claimed to be the head of the family, he neglected his duties towards her and their five children, leaving her to shoulder all responsibilities.
The plaintiff said she was solely responsible for feeding the family and paying the children’s school fees, as her husband consistently shirked his obligations.
She further alleged that the defendant was troublesome and denied her peace of mind despite her efforts to sustain the home.
Abiodun also told the court that her husband subjected her to frequent physical abuse, noting that she was often beaten despite her loyalty and dedication to the family.
She added that she was eventually sent out of the house by the defendant in August last year.
The plaintiff explained that the relationship was not formalised through the payment of bride price, as they began living together shortly after meeting.
She expressed her desire to move on with her life and urged the court to dissolve the union.
Abiodun also sought custody of their five children, assuring the court of her commitment to their proper upbringing.
She, however, appealed to the court to compel her husband to take responsibility for the children’s upkeep, particularly in the areas of feeding, education, and healthcare.
The plaintiff further requested an order restraining the defendant from interfering with her privacy.
In his response, Damilola agreed that both parties should go their separate ways.
The President of the court, Mrs S.M. Akintayo, adjourned the case until April 20 for defence.
