A yet-to-be-identified driver was reportedly shot dead on Sunday by operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service along the Osogbo–Iwo Road in Osun State.
The incident reportedly occurred around 10 a.m. at the Onibueja area of Ido-Osun, close to a police checkpoint.
According to information circulating online, the officers involved were said to be in mufti and were allegedly chasing the driver from the Iwo axis of the road before the shooting occurred.
A viral video from the scene showed the victim’s vehicle riddled with bullet holes while residents gathered around the area, expressing anger and calling for an investigation into the incident.
A resident of the community, who identified himself simply as Sunday, said the shooting attracted many people to the scene shortly after it happened.
The resident explained that the driver was heading toward the Osogbo end of the road from the Iwo direction when security operatives in plain clothes opened fire on his vehicle.
He said the driver died behind the steering wheel after the vehicle was hit by several bullets, noting that the shooting occurred near a police roadblock.
According to the resident, the identities of the shooters were initially unclear because the operatives were not dressed in official uniforms, which created confusion among those present.
He added that the development triggered anger among residents who gathered at the scene following the incident.
When contacted, the spokesperson of the Osun State Police Command, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed that the incident occurred.
Ojelabi stated that preliminary findings indicated the individuals who allegedly fired the shots were operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service.
He further disclosed that two individuals had been arrested in connection with the shooting.
The police spokesperson also noted that a detailed briefing on the incident would be provided to journalists after further investigation.NAN
