A 47-year-old man, Johnson Gabriel, on Wednesday sought the dissolution of his 20-year marriage to his wife, Janet, before a Kaduna Customary Court, alleging abuse and threats to his life.
The petitioner, who resides in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, alleged that his wife beats him whenever they have a disagreement.
He also accused her of no longer behaving like a wife, alleging that she was not submissive and often disrespected him.
Gabriel said he had made efforts to resolve the issues between them, but his attempts had failed.
He added that family members and their children had intervened in the matter, but his wife refused to change.
The petitioner said he was tired of the alleged constant abuse and threats to his life and wanted the marriage dissolved.
Janet, who was present in court, denied the allegations and accused her husband of trying to make her look bad so he could marry another woman.
She alleged that her husband’s attitude towards her changed whenever he had money.
The judge, Dauda Bala, advised the couple to reconcile, especially for the sake of their children.
Bala adjourned the matter until September 20 for a report of settlement or hearing.
