The Imole Campaign Council (TICC) has raised an alarm over the reported presence of armed security personnel at the residence of the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun, in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
The council alleged that the security personnel arrived at the residence in more than 10 black Hilux vehicles and effectively sealed off the premises.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the council’s spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, everyone inside the residence was reportedly prevented from leaving.
The council said it could not independently confirm the purpose of the security deployment or determine whether the personnel were providing security or carrying out official duties.
It therefore called on the relevant security agencies to immediately clarify the purpose of the deployment and the reported restriction of movement at the residence.
The council said it attempted to contact the publicly available official contact line of the Commissioner of Police for the election, the DIG Election contact line and the Police Situation Room, but received no response.
According to the statement, the Police Situation Room’s publicly provided number was also switched off.
The council urged security agencies to ensure that their deployments on election day did not create fear or intimidation among residents, stressing that the people of Osun should be allowed to freely decide their choice in the governorship election.
The statement called on everyone to remain peaceful and law-abiding while awaiting an official explanation from the relevant security authorities.
