The management of Kwara State Polytechnic, Ilorin, has suspended a lecturer accused of flogging Interim Joint Matriculation Board (IJMB) candidates who arrived late for their ongoing examinations.
The institution announced the suspension on Monday following the circulation of a viral video showing the lecturer physically reprimanding the students.
In a statement issued by the Polytechnic’s spokesperson, Hajia Halimat Garba, the management clarified that the individuals seen in the video were IJMB candidates and not students of the Polytechnic.
The management stated that the reason behind the lecturer’s action was yet to be determined but stressed that the method adopted was unacceptable and contrary to the institution’s standards.
According to the statement, the Polytechnic opposes all forms of violence and physical punishment, maintaining that discipline should be based on respect, understanding, and constructive guidance.
The institution further noted that there are more effective and humane ways of instilling discipline and values in students.
As a result, the lecturer has been suspended from duty pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.
The management said it appreciated the concerns expressed by stakeholders and assured the public that the matter was being treated with the seriousness it deserved.
Kwara State Polytechnic also reaffirmed its commitment to the values and integrity for which the institution is known.
The institution added that measures were being considered to prevent a recurrence of similar incidents in the future.
