Grade A Customary Court, Court 2, sitting in Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State, has adjourned a divorce suit filed by a man, Sylvester, against his wife, Kudirat, over allegations of persistent fighting, physical assault, and threats to his life.
The plaintiff told the court that his wife had denied him peace of mind throughout their relationship.
According to him, Kudirat constantly looked for opportunities to pick fights with him and often assaulted him physically.
Sylvester further alleged that the defendant consistently bore grudges against him, citing an instance when she refused to speak to him or relate with him for three months.
He also claimed that she stopped cooking for him and neglected his welfare.
The plaintiff told the court that Kudirat had recently threatened to kill him, adding that he could no longer continue living with her under the same roof.
He therefore urged the court to dissolve their union.
Kudirat was absent from court despite having been served with a hearing notice.
While giving evidence, Sylvester stated: “My wife and I never celebrated our marriage, and I did not pay her bride price.
“Kudirat began making life difficult for me from the very beginning of our relationship.
“She never appreciated anything I did and was always ready to quarrel.
“She is very aggressive and becomes violent whenever we have disagreements.
“On several occasions, she beat me severely.
“She humiliates me in the presence of our children and neighbours.
“She also likes to keep malice.
“At one point, she refused to speak to me or have anything to do with me for three months.
“Although she cooked and cared for herself, she stopped cooking for me. She neglects my welfare and shows no concern about my well-being.
“My wife now threatens to kill me, which is why I brought this matter before the court.
“I am appealing to this honourable court to dissolve our marriage before she carries out her threats.
“Kudirat has made my life miserable, and I can no longer endure her treatment of me.”
Following his testimony, the court president, Mrs O. E. Owoseni adjourned the case for the defendant’s defence.
She also ordered that a fresh hearing notice be issued and served on Kudirat.
