The Anambra State Police Command have arrested ASP Newton Isokpehi, the police officer seen threatening v!olence in a viral video. The officer had in the video threatened to shoot dead anyone who dares to film him while he is on duty.
Following the public outcry, the command immediately identified and arrested the officer.
In line with the disciplinary standards and ethical code of the Nigeria Police Force, internal disciplinary proceedings have since been activated against the officer. As part of the ongoing investigation, the officer has also been subjected to a drug test to aid the Command in establishing all surrounding circumstances and ensuring a thorough and transparent process.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly condemns the conduct displayed by the Officer in the video and reiterated that the Nigeria Police Force is a disciplined institution that will not condone misconduct, abuse of office, incitement, or any form of unprofessional behaviour capable of undermining public trust and confidence.
The Anambra State Police Command assured Nigerians that the outcome of the disciplinary process will be made public and that any officer found culpable will face appropriate sanctions in accordance with the law and police regulations.
AMILOADED had earlier reported that a video surfaced on social media showing a Nigerian police officer, Newton Isokpehi, threatening to shoot any citizen who attempts to record him while on duty.
The widely circulated footage, which has drawn condemnation online, showed Isokpehi, who claimed to have spent 26 years in the Nigeria Police Force, issuing threats against members of the public and senior officers who allegedly encouraged citizens to film policemen during operations.
In the video posted on his TikTok account, identified as “Newton Isokpehi for Life,” the officer warned that anyone who tried to record him while carrying out his duties risked being killed.
He also threatened superior officers who authorised the public to video police personnel on duty, warning that they would face severe consequences.
The officer further claimed that he and other policemen had continued to suffer despite years of service, lamenting poor welfare conditions within the force.
During the video, Isokpehi displayed what he described as bullet wounds and gunshot scars on his body, saying they were evidence of the dangers and sacrifices officers endure in the line of duty.
According to him, he had suffered multiple injuries while serving the country but was still battling hardship despite his years in the force.
The officer, however, acknowledged efforts by the current Inspector-General of Police to address unpaid insurance and death benefits owed to officers and families of deceased personnel.
He noted that some families whose relatives died many years ago had started receiving benefits since the assumption of office of the current police leadership.
According to him, “Any day I’m on duty as a police officer, carrying my rifle and doing my job, let somebody come and video me. That oga who gave you people the order to video us, he will go and do your burial. He will bury you. The number of you that I k!ll, he will be the one to bury all of you.
“I have served in the Nigerian Police Force for twenty-six years in this place where we are suffering. We suffer every single day, every time.
“If anyone is bold enough, just bring your camera. Watch me properly, bring your camera and come anywhere I am. Come and video me. If you don’t do it right, I will clear everybody down, the whole bus, everybody around. I swear to God, if I don’t do it, let me d!e.
“That oga, that police officer who gave the order for people to video policemen on duty, oya, I will deal with you all harshly. You will see serious wahala, you will see problem. Problem will destroy your generation.
“You think I was born like this? This is a gunshot wound. We are just working. Monkey dey work, baboon dey chop. My whole body is covered with bullet wounds and gunshot scars. Yet I’m still suffering,
“Look at families whose fathers died many years ago. Since this IG assumed office, he has started releasing their insurance and benefits,”
The video has since generated reactions from Nigerians on social media, with many calling for disciplinary action against the officer and demanding a medical evaluation of his mental state.
