Ekiti State Police Command has detained a police officer captured in a viral video allegedly behaving erratically under the influence of illicit substances.
The video, which recently surfaced online, showed residents attempting to restrain the officer as he reportedly displayed violent and unstable behaviour.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the spokesperson for the command, Abutu Sunday, said the officer had been identified and taken into custody following the circulation of the footage.
Abutu disclosed that the police sergeant was serving at the Ikole-Ekiti Divisional Police Headquarters before the incident.
He added that the officer was currently in stable condition and would undergo disciplinary procedures in line with the regulations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Falade Adegoroye Michael, also directed that the officer undergo medical and psychological evaluations ahead of further disciplinary action.
According to the police command, the officer’s conduct violated the professional standards and ethics of the Nigeria Police Force.
The commissioner further stated that the behaviour displayed by the officer does not reflect the values and image of the police institution.
