A medical doctor, Edwin Emegakor, who was abducted in Anambra State, has regained his freedom.
Emegakor, the Medical Director of Crown Multi-Specialist Hospital, Nkpor, was abducted on May 7, 2026, after attending to patients at the hospital by gunmen suspected to be wearing security uniforms.
It was gathered that security personnel attached to the hospital, medical workers, and other staff members were held at gunpoint during the incident, while their mobile phones were confiscated by the abductors.
The abduction had sparked outrage among members of the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA), Anambra State chapter, who threatened to embark on an indefinite strike from Monday if the doctor was not released within 48 hours.
The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after an Emergency General Meeting of the association held on Saturday.
However, the Chairman of the NMA in Anambra State, Dr. Princeton Okam, confirmed on Sunday that the abducted doctor had regained freedom, making the planned industrial action unnecessary.
Okam disclosed that Emegakor was released with the assistance of police operatives and had reunited with his family in good condition. He added that the association would convene another emergency meeting to take a decision on formally suspending the proposed strike action.
He also appreciated all those who contributed to the doctor’s rescue and called on the Anambra State Government to strengthen efforts toward protecting lives and property across the state.
