The Osun State Police Command has arrested a suspected hoodlum captured in a viral video assaulting female police officers on lawful traffic duty in Osogbo.
The command disclosed that the suspect was apprehended following a coordinated intelligence-led operation launched after the disturbing incident.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the suspect was seen in the viral footage attacking unarmed female officers with a stick and shovel while they were performing traffic control duties.
The statement noted that after the incident, the suspect fled the scene and escaped to Edo State in an attempt to evade arrest.
The police, however, tracked and apprehended him, bringing him into custody.
The command stated that the arrest demonstrates its commitment to ensuring that acts of violence against law enforcement officers and other citizens do not go unpunished.
It added that assault on police personnel carrying out lawful duties remains a serious criminal offence, warning that such actions will not be tolerated.
The police further disclosed that the suspect is currently in custody and will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations.
Reacting to the development, the Commissioner of Police condemned the attack, describing it as barbaric and unacceptable.
He reassured residents of the command’s resolve to protect lives and property, urging members of the public to respect law enforcement officers and cooperate with them.
The command also called on residents to remain law-abiding and report suspicious activities to the nearest police station.
