A civil society group, The Osun Masterminds, has condemned an attack on an APC supporter in Osun State, warning that rising political tension ahead of the 2026 governorship election could escalate into a breakdown of law and order.
The group raised the concern during its April State of the State address delivered by its Executive Director, Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, on Tuesday.
According to the group, the incident involved an Accord Party supporter who displayed a cap allegedly seized from an APC supporter, an act it described as intimidation and suppression of political freedom.
The group warned that such actions are unacceptable and could trigger wider unrest if not checked.
It stressed that suppressing the political expression of others undermines democratic principles and poses a threat to peaceful coexistence.
The organisation urged political actors in the state to conduct their campaigns peacefully and respect opposing views as the election approaches.
It added that individuals involved in acts of violence, intimidation, cyberbullying, or defamation during the campaign period should be regarded as enemies of the people and the state.
Beyond the political climate, the group also highlighted worsening economic hardship across the country, noting that many Nigerians are struggling to survive amid rising costs.
It stated that despite claims of macroeconomic improvements by the government, citizens continue to grapple with high food prices, increased fuel costs, and insecurity affecting agricultural production.
The group called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to ease the burden on citizens, including reducing fuel costs and addressing insecurity disrupting food supply chains.
It also urged the Osun State Government to adopt more proactive and people-oriented policies aimed at improving living conditions.
According to the group, state governments must move beyond routine administrative roles and focus on implementing policies that directly impact the lives of the people.
On national politics, the organisation commended recent opposition parties’ engagement in Ibadan but cautioned against statements capable of inciting violence or weakening democratic institutions.
It emphasised the need to safeguard the integrity of the Independent National Electoral Commission and called for adequate support to ensure credible elections.
