Boko Haram terrorists have released a video warning the Nigerian government against attempting a forceful rescue of 416 people abducted in Borno State.
In the footage released on Monday, the insurgent group issued a 72-hour ultimatum, stating that failure to meet its demands would result in the relocation of the victims to undisclosed locations where they may never be found again.
The group also declared that it would not hesitate to confront government forces if any rescue operation is carried out by force, stressing its readiness for battle.
The fighters, who appeared in military camouflage in the video, insisted that they are fully prepared for any confrontation should the authorities choose a military approach.
Delivering its message in Hausa with English subtitles, the group said it was addressing both the Borno South Youths Alliance and the Nigerian government, which it claimed not to recognise.
The terrorists described the warning as their first and final message, noting that a 72-hour window had been given for their demands to be met.
They warned that if the conditions are not fulfilled within the stipulated time, all the abducted victims, including women and children, would be moved to different locations beyond reach.
The group also urged observers to take note of the captives, warning that they might never be seen again if the situation escalates.
While the insurgents did not explicitly outline all their demands in the video, they are reportedly seeking a ransom of N5 billion for the release of the victims.
They further stated that the government is free to attempt a forceful rescue but maintained that such an action would be met with resistance.
A spokesperson for the group reiterated that the message should be taken seriously, adding that the insurgents do not make such threats lightly.
Meanwhile, the President of the Borno South Youths Alliance, Samaila Kaigama, confirmed that the group had earlier demanded a N5 billion ransom during mediation efforts involving the abducted women and children.
Kaigama, in a statement, called for urgent intervention, appealing to authorities and well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts aimed at securing the release of the victims.
He specifically urged President Bola Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Governor Babagana Zulum, as well as business leaders and philanthropists, to act swiftly to prevent further escalation of the situation.
