Veteran Nollywood actress Eucharia Anunobi has shared details of the challenges she experienced while pursuing education and a career in the entertainment industry, including opposition from her father.
Speaking during a podcast interview, Anunobi explained that her father opposed her education and career ambitions because he believed investing in a girl child’s education was unnecessary, as she would eventually marry and adopt another family name.
She stated that her father stopped supporting her schooling despite being financially capable and distanced himself from her after she declined to follow the career path he preferred for her.
The actress said she later turned to modelling as a means of sustaining herself and funding her education during the period she lacked family support.
Anunobi also recounted that her father confined her to a room for six months after she refused to complete employment forms he wanted her to submit for an office job.
According to her, the forms were repeatedly passed to her through the door while she was locked inside, but she declined to fill them because she had no interest in working in an office environment.
She further disclosed that her father strongly disapproved of her acting career and at a point distanced himself from her, which compelled her to secretly leave the house and sometimes climb the fence to attend auditions.
Anunobi said a turning point in their relationship occurred after she won her first award in London for the film Glamour Girls.
She explained that when she returned home and presented the award to her father, he asked her to kneel down, placed sand in her hand and prayed for her success, declaring that just as the grains of sand could not be counted, her glory would be immeasurable.
She added that the moment marked the first time her father openly embraced and blessed her after years of disagreement.
