A 300-level Law student of the University of Ibadan (UI), Miss Abolarin Tomisin, and seven other victims abducted while returning from a national conference in Imo State have regained their freedom after spending 22 days in captivity.
The President of the University of Ibadan Students’ Union, Temidayo Adeboye, confirmed the development in a statement issued on Monday.
Adeboye said the release of the victims was officially confirmed by the relevant authorities and representatives of the organisation involved.
According to him, the victims are undergoing the necessary post-release procedures before returning to their respective destinations, adding that Tomisin is expected to return safely to the university community soon.
The Students’ Union president commended security agencies, the University of Ibadan management, the leadership of the Scripture Union and everyone whose efforts contributed to the successful release of the victims.
He also appreciated members of the university community for their prayers, patience, solidarity and support throughout the period of the student’s captivity.
Adeboye expressed gratitude to God for the victims’ release and prayed for their complete healing, restoration and well-being after the ordeal.
The victims, including the Director-General of the Scripture Union Nigeria, Uwem Cosmas, were abducted along the Imo-Anambra boundary on June 14, 2026, while returning from the Scripture Union national conference held at the Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.
Adeboye had earlier disclosed that Tomisin was travelling with the National General Director of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Uwem Cosmas, and other conference participants when they were kidnapped.
He also clarified that Tomisin, who serves as the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship and Vice-President of the UI chapter, was the only University of Ibadan student among those abducted, contrary to reports circulating on social media.
A video shared after their release showed the freed victims singing praises, worshipping and offering prayers of thanksgiving alongside fellow believers in gratitude for surviving the 22-day ordeal.
