Afrobeats singer Adekunle Gold has opened up about the stigma he faces as a person living with sickle cell disease.
In a recent interview with media personality Angela Yee, the “Orente” crooner revealed that people often react with fear and pity whenever he tells them he has sickle cell disorder.
According to the singer, many people usually look at him as though he may die soon after learning about his health condition.
Adekunle Gold also recounted how he once wished for death at the age of 20 after suffering one of the most severe sickle cell crises of his life.
He disclosed that the pain became so unbearable that he prayed for God to take his life.
The singer explained that his mother, who would normally rebuke him for making such statements, was unable to stop him on that particular occasion because of the severity of the situation.
According to him, the experience reached a point where death seemed like the only thing that made sense at the time.
Adekunle Gold, however, expressed gratitude to God for giving him the strength to continue fighting and surviving the disease.
