The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the killing of a man, Kolade Eluyera, by suspected gunmen in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed this on Saturday while confirming the incident to NAN.
According to him, the deceased was found with gunshot wounds after the incident was reported at the Ikire Divisional Police Headquarters in the early hours of Saturday.
Ojelabi said the police had commenced investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and were making efforts to apprehend those responsible.
He added that the command remained committed to ensuring that the perpetrators were brought to justice.
Following the incident, the Imole Campaign Council (TICC), the campaign organisation supporting the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke, called for a thorough investigation into the killing.
In a statement issued by its spokesperson, Pelumi Olajengbesi, the campaign council alleged that the deceased was the son of the Irewole Accord Party Women Leader and claimed that the attack was politically motivated.
The group further alleged that there had been previous complaints and security reports concerning intimidation and attacks targeted at members of the Accord Party in Irewole Local Government Area.
The campaign organisation expressed concern over what it described as rising political tension and violence in parts of the state ahead of the governorship election.
It called on the Inspector-General of Police, the Department of State Services and other relevant security agencies to conduct what it described as a comprehensive and transparent investigation into the incident.
The council also urged security agencies to strengthen security presence in Irewole Local Government and other sensitive areas to prevent further breakdown of law and order.
The statement further stressed the need for those found culpable in connection with the killing to be identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The campaign council also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and members of the Accord Party affected by the incident.
