A staff of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Jessey A. Audu, has slumped and died on his way to work.
Ibrahim Adamu, said the incident happened at Gwahaon in Gwagwalada Area Council on Tuesday, April 21.
Adamu said the deceased left home for the office but suddenly slumped and fell into a drainage near an Army checkpoint in the area.
He said some passersby noticed the deceased lying inside the drainage and raised the alarm.
Adamu added that the police, with the help of some passersby, identified the deceased and immediately contacted NUT staff, who rushed to the scene and evacuated him to the hospital.
He said doctors at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital in Gwagwalada later confirmed Jessey dead, and his remains were deposited at the hospital’s morgue.
According to Daily Trust, the deceased was a cleaner with the FCT NUT state office and a native of Yelwa community in Toto Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, but resided in Unguwar Dodo in Gwagwalada Area Council.
It was also learnt that the deceased, who was married with children, was hale and hearty when he left home around 7:12 a.m.
The Chairman of the FCT wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Mohammed Abdullahi Shafas, confirmed the death to reporters on Tuesday and stated that he had returned from the morgue where the remains of Jessey were deposited.
However, some staff members who spoke to the publication said the deceased was at work on Monday and carried out his duties before closing for the day and returning home.
A staff member identified as Chris said he was with the deceased on Monday after work, noting that Jessey cleaned the offices and surroundings until about 4:00 p.m. and appeared healthy before leaving for home.
A police source at the Gwagwalada Division also confirmed Jessey’s death.
