Yoruba nation activist Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, was seen wearing a fez cap bearing the logo of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at a social event on Tuesday.
Igboho attended the first Ramadan lecture organised by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, following his coronation.
In a now-viral video from the event, Igboho greeted the monarch and the guest lecturer, Chief Imam of Offa Sheikh Muyideen Salmon, while wearing the APC-branded cap.
The footage has triggered widespread reactions on social media, with many users comparing Igboho’s recent actions to those of separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu and questioning shifts in political alignments.
A social media user identified as #Jaythrilli stated that Sunday Igboho was shamelessly moving around with an APC cap on, adding that one cannot fight for Yoruba freedom while dining with those who impoverished the same Yoruba people, and that this was why the user does not rate him at all.
Another user, #Felixherbt, stated that for those who still do not understand what Mazi Nnamdi is fighting for, they will soon understand but it will be too late, noting that Sunday Igboho is now jumping around with the APC cartel while Nnamdi Kanu rejected a political position offered to win him over, which doubled respect for Kanu, and describing Igboho’s shift from freeing Yoruba people from Fulani claws to kissing the ring.
User #Admiral_Cyborg opined that it will interest people to know this is why Kanu is still in Sokoto.
On Facebook, Samuel Olafusi wrote that the APC cap on Igboho’s head raised questions, suggesting that once someone joins they become a saint, questioning why Nnamdi Kanu has not been released since both faced punishment for similar reasons, and stating that Nigeria is truly divided and operates in a transitional democracy.
User #daddyfemzy queried whether Igboho could really be blamed, noting that he was in asylum, declared wanted dead or alive by Buhari, and that the recent APC caucus brokered his return home courtesy of Ladoja, asking what else could be expected and urging practicality by asking if others in his position would not do the same.
Recall that Olayomi Koiki, spokesman for Sunday Igboho, stated that all arrangements have been concluded for his principal’s return to Nigeria after prominent monarchs persuaded President Bola Tinubu to remove Igboho’s name from the list of wanted persons.
Koiki explained that the traditional rulers who intervened include the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja; the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi; and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Alao, among others.
Igboho fled Nigeria on July 1, 2021, after a raid on his Ibadan residence by a combined team of the Department of State Services and the Nigerian Army over allegations of stockpiling arms and ammunition.
The raid occurred amid his campaign to evict armed Fulani herdsmen from the South-West in response to attacks on farmers.During the raid, three of his aides were killed and 13 others were arrested.
Igboho fled to the Benin Republic intending to travel to Germany but was arrested at Cotonou Airport on July 19, 2021, and detained for over a year before his release in March 2022.
Under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Igboho was declared wanted, denied a Nigerian passport, and had his bank accounts frozen despite favourable court rulings.
In 2025, during a visit to the Olugbon Palace in Orile Igbon, Surulere Local Government of Oyo State, Igboho expressed frustration at living in exile and appealed to President Tinubu’s administration to remove his name from the wanted list.
He also made the appeal to the Olubadan, Oba Ladoja.Koiki stated that Igboho has now been cleared by the Presidency and may return to the country at any moment and will be fully reintegrated after his clearance has been granted.
Similar Cases of Controversy Involving Sunday Igboho and Political Alignments
Sunday Igboho has faced several instances of public backlash and debate over his political stances and associations between 2021 and 2026.
In July 2021, after his arrest in Benin Republic, some Yoruba activists and online commentators accused him of abandoning the Yoruba self-determination struggle by seeking asylum abroad while others continued the fight on the ground.
In early 2023, Igboho’s public endorsement of certain politicians in Oyo State drew criticism from supporters who felt it contradicted his earlier separatist rhetoric against the federal government.
In late 2025, his appeals to President Tinubu and traditional rulers for removal from the wanted list sparked online arguments, with some describing it as a compromise of principles, while others viewed it as pragmatic navigation of political realities.
