Media – A 42-year-old man, Adebisi Benjamin, has been remanded in prison custody after his arraignment before a Magistrate Court in Osogbo, Osun State.
According to Dailymailng report, the Osun State Police Command on Wednesday charged Benjamin with four counts related to alleged defamation and associated offences.
The case, filed as Commissioner of Police vs Adebisi Benjamin, was heard at the Magistrate Court in Osogbo.
The publication rpeortdi that Police prosecutor Elisha Olusegun informed the court that the defendant, who maintains a Facebook account under the name “Benjamin Adebisi,” published defamatory statements between February 8 and March 2026 on various social media platforms, including Facebook.
The prosecutor stated that the publications were made in a manner capable of injuring the reputation of Osun State University, its Vice-Chancellor Professor Odunayo Clement Adebooye, and a senior academic, Professor Amos Popoola, thereby exposing them to hatred, contempt, and ridicule.
The prosecutor added that the defendant made further posts targeting Professor Amos Popoola, including statements that suggested questionable professional conduct.
The prosecutor noted that the defendant allegedly presented himself as a lecturer of the university in a way likely to mislead the public.The alleged offences contravene Section 373 and are punishable under Sections 375, 484, and 249(d) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II, Laws of Osun State of Nigeria, 2002.
Benjamin, described as a former staff member of the university, pleaded not guilty to all four counts.
Defence counsel Tunbosun Oladipupo applied for bail in liberal terms, citing Section 36(4) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and arguing that the charges remain allegations until proven.
The prosecution opposed bail, stating that the defendant had been difficult to apprehend and was eventually arrested in Akure, Ondo State, through electronic tracking.
It was gathered that the Presiding Magistrate Olusegun Ayilara granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties.
The court stipulated that one surety must be a resident of Osogbo with valid documentation, while the second must be a blood relative of the defendant.
The magistrate also ordered the defendant to deposit his international passport with the court.
It was gathered that Benjamin could not meet the bail conditions and was remanded at Ilesa Correctional Centre.
The matter was adjourned to April 14, 2026, for mention.
