A member of the Accord Party, Yomi David Akanji, has reportedly been shot dead by suspected political thugs in Osogbo, Osun State, as the party also demanded the immediate and unconditional release of its House of Representatives candidate for Ijesa South Federal Constituency, Popoola Alaba, popularly known as Alabama.
The development was contained in a statement signed by the Chairman of the Media and Publicity Committee of the Imole Campaign Council, Rep. Bamidele Salam.
According to the statement, Akanji, described as a father of three, was attacked a short distance from his residence in the Olude area of Osogbo on Friday night.
The campaign council alleged that the deceased was waylaid by his attackers while driving and was shot inside his vehicle after he was unable to escape.
The council also disclosed that Alaba and three other Accord members were arrested on Saturday morning and taken to the Osun State Police Command Headquarters in Osogbo.
It alleged that the four party members were attending a meeting with Accord canvassers when police officers stormed the venue, arrested them and assaulted some party supporters.
The campaign council called for the immediate and unconditional release of Alaba and the other detained party members.
It further urged the Osun State Police Command to ensure the safety of those in custody, warning that it would hold the command responsible should any harm come to them.
The campaign council also called on the police and other security agencies to investigate the killing of Akanji and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
