Claims have continued to circulate on social media suggesting that Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, is the “owner of Nigeria” after Google displayed his Wikipedia profile in response to searches for “Who is the owner of Nigeria?”
The claim gained traction after several social media users shared screenshots showing Dangote’s profile appearing in Google search results, prompting many others to repeat the search and post similar screenshots online.
The development led to widespread misinformation, with some users wrongly concluding that the billionaire businessman owns Nigeria.
Among those who reacted was popular Nigerian comedian and media personality Helen Paul, who shared a screenshot of the Google search result on her official Instagram page.
The actress questioned the search result and remarked that the person identified as the owner of Nigeria was rarely seen on social media, maintained a calm public image and seldom shared details of family and friends online.
Despite the viral claim, there is no legal or constitutional basis for describing Aliko Dangote as the owner of Nigeria.
A check by journalist also showed Dangote’s profile when the phrase “Who is the owner of Nigeria?” was entered into Google.
However, similar searches conducted for other countries also produced the names of prominent billionaires from those nations. In one instance, Jack Ma appeared as the owner of China.
The outcome suggests that the issue is linked to Google’s search algorithm rather than any factual information.
Google’s search engine retrieves and displays information already available on the internet. When it cannot find a direct or relevant answer to a search query, it may display unrelated or misleading results, including random Wikipedia profiles.
This is not the first time Google’s search algorithm has generated inaccurate results. In the past, the search engine also displayed misleading information, including a claim identifying Agbani Darego as Nigeria’s ugliest woman.
Contrary to the viral posts, Nigeria is a sovereign nation governed under the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The country is led by an elected President who serves as both Head of State and Head of Government.
Dangote remains one of Africa’s most successful businessmen, but he does not own Nigeria. The Google search result linking his Wikipedia profile to the query is misleading and should not be taken as a factual representation of the country’s ownership.
