Security agencies in Osun State on Tuesday received 300 motorcycles donated by the state chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) under the All Progressives Congress (APC) to boost security operations across the state.
Receiving the motorcycles at the Osun Command headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Osogbo, the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, commended the Federal Government for granting financial autonomy to local government councils, describing it as a step that has enhanced grassroots development and support for security.
Gotan stated that the donation would significantly strengthen the capacity of security agencies, noting that tackling insecurity requires the cooperation of all stakeholders, including government institutions and local authorities. He added that the motorcycles would improve patrol efficiency and ensure quicker response to incidents, particularly in remote areas.
He emphasized that security remains a collective responsibility and called for sustained collaboration among stakeholders to address emerging challenges across the country.
The police commissioner assured that the motorcycles would be put to proper use, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force and other benefiting agencies would deploy the equipment effectively to enhance safety and maintain law and order in the state.
Gotan further appreciated President Bola Tinubu for the financial autonomy granted to local governments, noting that the policy has enabled councils to undertake impactful initiatives such as the donation.
Speaking on behalf of the donors, Osun ALGON Chairman, Samuel Idowu, explained that the purchase of the motorcycles was made possible through improved financial independence of local government councils in the state.
He noted that the initiative demonstrated the capacity of local governments to contribute meaningfully to national security when adequately empowered, adding that the councils remain committed to supporting security agencies.
Idowu disclosed that each of the 30 local government areas would receive 10 motorcycles, distributed among security formations, including the police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), vigilante groups, hunters, and other community-based security outfits.
He added that the motorcycles would enhance mobility, improve response time, and enable security personnel to access difficult terrains, particularly in rural communities.
The ALGON chairman stressed that the intervention was aimed at strengthening community policing and ensuring improved safety across all parts of the state.
He urged the benefiting agencies to maintain the motorcycles properly and deploy them judiciously to achieve the intended objective of enhancing security operations.
