The senator representing Osun East Senatorial District, Francis Fadahunsi, has allegedly threatened members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, sparking concerns in Ilesa, Osun State.
Fadahunsi reportedly made the remarks on Tuesday during a protest by members and supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) at the palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Owa Adesuyi Haastrup. The protest was organised to express displeasure over what the party described as incessant killings of APC members in Ijesaland.
In a video circulating online, Fadahunsi, speaking in Yoruba, warned that Accord members would be killed if they were seen in Ilesa before the election. He also alleged that Accord supporters had been responsible for attacks on APC members and questioned the number of people allegedly killed by APC supporters.
The senator further threatened to prevent Accord members from voting on Saturday, even if they presented their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) at polling units.
He also warned traditional chiefs whom he accused of supporting the Accord Party, saying Ijesaland would not accommodate chiefs who allowed themselves to be used by political interests. He described the situation as one that would henceforth be handled on an “eye for an eye” basis.
The development comes a day after three people were reported killed in a violent clash around the Imo area of Ilesa on Monday evening.
Sources within the community attributed the clash to supporters of the APC and Accord Party.
However, the Osun State Police Command said the incident was a cult-related clash involving suspected members of the Aiye and Eiye confraternities.
